Boyhood Photos of J.H. Lartigue. The Family Album of the Gilded Age

Categories: , ,
A deserved photo book classic -- an enchanting, even magical, photo album of an exciting, active, privileged childhood in Belle Epoque France. With bicycle races, flying machines, legendary car races, water bicycles (or whatever the funky vehicle would be called), barrels on water, etc. Captured is a sort of inflection point between the modern and traditional, when the transportation machines we take for granted were novel, and fun, the fun to animate the child in all of us. The book is also put together unlike standard books, including photo books; with the photos mounted onto thick card leaves the book almost passes for a one off in many places -- like the finest of private photo albums. The vast majority of photos capture action, with many also exuding a light-heartedness and humor -- gaffes, accidents, goofiness, an infectious life as a lark. Oblong, 23.5 by 29 cm. 126, [2] pp. The cloth cover has a few areas with its scarlet color thinned or now with a milky overlay. Minor blistering of the cloth. As common with oblong volumes of a certain weight, a touch of a shaky quality -- this, despite a fundamental tightness to the binding. Generally clean within. Title: Boyhood Photos of J.H. Lartigue.
